SECTION 5 - HIGH RESISTANCE GROUNDING (HRG)

The HRG system is popular in the continuous-process industry because of the service continuity it provides during a ground fault. An added benefit is the enhanced electrical safety from arc flash when a ground fault occurs.

Whether an HRG system is implemented in a new facility or is introduced as a change to an existing facility, education and training of applicable personnel is required for safe operation and maintenance.

HRG systems can enhance the reliability of a production facility by providing a window of time for personnel to locate and isolate faulted equipment prior to a unit or plant trip. The design of a high resistance grounding system should include adequate ground current sensing equipment so that the location of the ground fault can be identified in a timely manner.
